CIAC FOOTBALL: Locals go 3-for-4! Maloney, Sheehan & Southington advance; Cheshire falls in Simsbury

MERIDEN — State football quarterfinals are in the books or the four area qualifiers.

Maloney,  Sheehan and Southington have advanced. Cheshire has been eliminated.

Here’s the rundown….

*At Falcon Field, Maloney beat Berlin 35-7 on four Angel Arce touchdown passes to Kam Moreno and a TD run by James Tarver.

The third Arce-to-Moreno connection came with 1:10 left in the first half and followed shortly after linebacker Kody Talento recovered a Berlin fumble at the Maloney 2.

Berlin had been driving for a potential tying touchdown with Maloney leading 14-7. Instead, Maloney extended its lead to 21-7 by the break and pushed it to 35-7 before the third quarter is out.

Next up: A rematch with Daniel Hand in the Class L semifinals on Monday night in Madison.

*At Sheehan, the Titans picked up right where they left off on Thanksgiving Day. They blew out Woodland Regional 51-0 and are heading to a semifinal date at top-seeded Ansonia in Class S.

It was 44-0 at halftime. Terrence Bogan ran for three touchdowns and Kyle Simmons threw three TD passes – two to Jordan Davis, one to Michael Lemay.

Russell Rutkowski added an 8-yard TD run in the third quarter.

*In Southington, the Blue Knights pulled out a defensive Class LL battle with Ridgefield, 13-9.

A 5-yard TD run by Dillon Kohl answered a Ridgefield field goal to put Southington up 7-3 at the break.

Southington extended that lead to 13-3 on a 5-yard TD pass from Brady Lafferty to Carter Uhlman with 4:44 left in the third quarter.

A gamble on a fake punt, though, backfired in the fourth quarter, leading to a 35-yard scoring drive for Ridgefield. The PAT was no good, leaving Southington ahead 13-9.

Ridgefield had a drive going in the final minutes, but Southington’s defense, rock-solid all year long, made the final stop.

The Blue KNights will host Darien on Monday night with a chance to avenge state semifinal losses in 2015 and 2016 to the Blue Wave, not to mention their lone loss of the current season.

*In Simsbury, Cheshire bolted to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter only to see the host Trojans storm back with 17 unanswered in the second and hold on for a 17-14 Class LL victory

Cheshire had two great chances to re-take the lead in the fourth quarter only to be undone by two turnovers – one on a pitch inside the Simsbury 10 and another on an interception in the red zone.

That’s the rundown for the locals. Here are all the quarterfinal scores from around the state.
