NEW HAVEN — Local players continue to be a driving force for the Southern Connecticut State University soccer program.

Heading into Saturday’s action, Wallingford’s Kelsey Burr leads the Lady Owls in scoring with five goals and two assists, while Meriden’s Devin Juan has played not only every game, but every minute, in net for the men’s team.

For their work, both were recognized this week by the Northeast-10 Conference. Burr was the Northeast-10 women’s soccer Player of Week and Juan made the weekly Honor Roll.

Burr, a grad student, had a hand in all three goals in Southern’s 3-0 victory over St. Michael’s. She scored twice and assisted on one.

The Sheehan grad also had a goal and an assist in a 3-3 tie with Pace this past Tuesday to run her career totals to 17 goals and eight assists.

Burr and the Lady Owls are 3-1-2 going into Saturday’s NE-10 game in Albany, N.Y. vs. St. Rose.

Juan and the men’s team are 2-3-1 as they head to Manchester, N.H. to take on St. Anselm.

Last week, in Southern’s conference opener, Juan pitched a four-save shutout in a 1-0 victory over St. Rose. On the season, the Maloney grad has two shutouts, five goals allowed and 17 saves in 540 minutes of action.

Also in New Haven, Meriden’s Kelvin Cortez and Albertus Magnus are 4-0-3, which is the longest unbeaten streak to begin a season in the team’s history.

Cortez, a grad student out of Wilcox Tech, converted penalty kicks this past week in a 1-0 win over Colby-Sawyer College and in a 2-2 tie with Norwich 2-2. He now has 18 goals for his career.

The Falcons host St. Joseph on Saturday night.

Former members of the Platt football team are now on the prowl in the college ranks, starting with Antwone Santiago.

The Record-Journal’s 2021 Player of the Year, now at Temple University, had four tackles in his team’s 41-9 victory over Norfolk State last weekend. Santiago and the Owls take on the University of Miami this Saturday.

Closer to home, former Platt receiver Tylon Papallo followed up a 9-catch, 112-yard game against Assumption with eight receptions, 88 yards and a touchdown against New Haven.

Papallo leads the Owls (0-3) with 21 catches for 257 yards heading into Saturday’s home game with Bentley. Kickoff is at noon.

In Massachusetts, Southington’s Dillon Kohl leads Western New England in rushing with 211 yards on 37 carries. Cheshire’s Jason Shumilla, a defensive back, is among Western New England’s tackling leaders with 18.

The Golden Bears (2-1) are at Susquehanna University on Saturday.

And in Maine, the University of New England is off to a 3-0 start with wins over Coast Guard (44-28), Plymouth State (31-21) and Gallaudet (31-10).

Shane LaPorte of Southington (22-198) and A.J. DeFilio of Durham (21-219) are the leading receivers for UNE. Both had a touchdown catch against Gallaudet.

Gavin Anderson, another Southington grad at wide receiver for New England, had a TD catch against Plymouth State and is 7-for-74 on the season.

Defensive back Mike Lemay, a member of Sheehan’s 2019 state championship team, is among UNE’s tackling leaders with 16. He’s also broken up three passes and picked off one.
