MERIDEN — Rising Maloney senior Reynaldo Torres got the better of his cross country coach, Derek Destefano, on Wednesday evening in the second race of the 2020 Meriden Fun Run series.
Neither, however, could lay a shoe on Wallingford’s Derrick Arnold.
The 2020 Sheehan graduate, who is going on to run cross country and track at Southern Connecticut State University, blazed the three miles down the Meriden Linear Trail to Dossin Beach and back to the Platt track in 16:47.
Torres came across half a minute later in 17:24. Destefano, who won the opening race of the series on July 1 in 17:52, cut his time to 17:46, but on this night it was only good for third.
The women’s winner from Week 1, meanwhile, did repeat. That was Selena Chatman, who clocked in at 20:59.
Aside from the top three, times were a bit slower than in the opening race of the series — not surprising, given Wednesday’s humidity.
One consistent from Week 1 to Week 2 was the field. It was again robust, featuring 32 runners.
There were some good young legs in the mix. Joining Arnold and Torres were two high school teammates: Xavier Zaler of Maloney (4th, 19:20) and Ethan Venoit of Sheehan (8th, 20:18).
Bridging the gap between those two runners were Phil Crosby (5th, 19:40), Richard Fernandes (6th, 19:53) and Joseph Migliore (7th, 20:05). Jack Curry was 9th in 20:22. Selena Chatman rounded out the Top 10.
The Fun Run series continues every Wednesday at the Platt track through August 19. Social distancing rules are observed. No bathrooms are available on site and runners must bring their own water.
