SATURDAY SCHOLASTICS: Sheehan girls vault to 4-0; Platt, Cheshire fall in matinees; Southington swimmers build at Cornerstone

MILFORD — Double-figure days from Hayleigh Lagase, Caitlyn Hunt and Caitlyn Velez added up to a 60-49 SCC victory Saturday for the Sheehan girls basketball team.

It was a victory that puts the Titans at 4-0.

Sheehan took control in the second half. Down 29-23, the Titans outscored Law 37-20 after the break.

Lagase hit five times from beyond the arc and finished with a game-high 19 points.

Hunt put up 14. Velez added 13 — almost all of it coming from the free throw line, where the senior point guard shot 11-for-12.

Kate Konareski collected 18 points for Law (1-3). Maddie Lula was good for 16.

Sheehan hosts rival Lyman Hall on Monday. It will be the season opener for the Trojans, who were in quarantine for the first two weeks of the season.

Wethersfield 52, Platt 39: The Eagles jumped out to a 16-8 lead after one quarter and held the Panthers at bay after that in this CCC Region D noon-time tilt in Meriden.

Vanessa Vendetti of Wethersfield drained four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 17 points.

Wallica Bailey led Platt with 14 points. Ja’Lexia West (11) was also in double figures for the Panthers. Aaliyah Burnely added eight points.

It was the second straight win for Wethersfield (2-2), which beat Maloney 42-14 on Monday. Platt slipped to 1-2, with another home game looming Tuesday against Berlin.

Shelton 42, Cheshire 32: The Gaels outscored the Rams 16-6 in the fourth quarter to secure this SCC matinee in Shelton.

Clarissa Pierre scored 16 points and Laryssa Guimaraes Gabriel posted 12 for Shelton (3-1), which won its third straight after falling on opening night to Sacred Heart Academy.

Grace Lurz chalked up a team-high 14 for the Rams (1-2), who had just earned Angelica Ariola her first varsity head coaching win Wednesday in 46-40 victory over Guilford.

Against Shelton, Cheshire fell behind 10-4 in the first quarter, but got back into it by winning the second quarter 13-6 and taking a 17-16 edge into halftime.

The game was knotted 26-all going into the final eight minutes.

Boys basketball

Xavier 51, Cheshire 40: The Falcons outscored the Rams 16-6 in the third quarter to expand a 21-19 halftime lead in a SCC matchup in Middletown.

Xavier’s Parker Hunter scored eight of his 15 points in the decisive third frame and Justin Menard finished with a game-high 22 as the Falcons (2-1) rebounded from their loss on Friday night to Notre Dame-West Haven.

Cheshire (1-2) got a team-high 13 points from Yasha Laskin, who connected for three 3-pointers. Luke Nieman added nine points.

The Rams host East Haven on Monday.

Boys swimming

Southington 92, Avon 86: Landon Colby, Jackson Malsheske and Brett Sheldrick each won two individual races and swam on two winning relays to propel the Blue Knights to the CCC victory over the Falcons at Cornerstone Aquatics in West Hartford.

Matt Niro added first-place points in the 100-yard freestyle (52.95) and Peter Zalewski anchored two winning relays as Southington improved to 2-0.

Niro and Zalewski teamed with Malsheske and Sheldrick on the 200 medley relay (1:46.94) to set the tone.

Malsheske went on to win the 200 IM (2:13.13) and 100 backstroke (1:00.18), while Sheldrick took the 50 freestyle (24.14) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.98).

Colby brought home the 200 freestylwe (1:54.10) and 100 butterfly (56.22).

He teamed with Sheldrick, Alex LeClair and Zalewski on the 200 free relay (1:40.64).

Colby, LeClair, Niro and Malsheske sealed the deal on the 400 free relay (3:39.27).
