CHESHIRE — Wallingford’s Cathy Inglese was among the first five girls basketball players announced by the CIAC for its All-Century Team.
The CIAC, celebrating its 100th year overseeing scholastic sports in Connecticut, is naming the top 25 boys and top 25 girls basketball players in state history leading up to this year’s state finals at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Inglese was named alongside Tracy Lis of Killingly, Jennifer Monti of Ellington, Nykesha Sales of Bloomfield and Tracy Stolle of Wamogo.
Inglese, who tragically passed away last summer at age 60 from a traumatic brain injury suffered in a fall, led Sheehan to the 1976 Class L state championship and was the program’s first 1,000-point scorer.
Inglese went on to a collegiate playing career at Southern Connecticut State University and a long, checkered coaching career highlighted by tenures at the University of Vermont and Boston College.
Inglese is a member of the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame along with Lis, Monti and Sales.
Lis scored a state-record 3,681 points before graduating Killingly in 1998. Monti, a 2,089-point scorer, was the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 1997.
Sales, after graduating Bloomfield in 1994 with 2,304 points, went on to star at UConn. Stolle scored 1,924 points and led Wamogo to the 1995 Class S crown, its only state title in school history.
The CIAC will continue announcing members of its All-Century Basketball Teams leading up to this year’s state tournament finals the weekend of March 21-22.
