AROUND THE HORN: Hot COCO 5K run Saturday; YMCA tryouts on tap; top area divers compete in state meets



CHESHIRE — The 14th annual Hot COCO 5K, 1 Mile Walk & Kids Fun Run takes place this morning at 10 a.m. at The Norton School.

The course follows the linear trail along the Farmington Canal Line. 

Recognition will go to the top three overall male and female finishers, the first male and female finishers in the over-40 Masters Division, the first male and female finishers from Cheshire, as well as to the top three male and female finishers in various age groups.

The race benefits Abilities Without Boundaries, a non-profit organization based in Cheshire that provides adults living with disabilities the opportunity to succeed in social and vocational pursuits through employment partnerships.

Tryouts today for Superjets hoops

MERIDEN — The Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA will hold tryouts for its Superjets travel basketball team today from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Meriden YMCA.

The Superjets are a competitive basketball team for boys in Grade 6. They play a 20-game schedule that runs November through March.

State meets draw area’s top divers

WALLINGFORD — Lyman Hall and Sheehan both put three divers in the top 10 in this week’s CIAC class championship meets, held at the Sheehan and Middletown pools.

The top area performer, just as she was as the Southern Connecticut Conference meet, was Lyman Hall sophomore Maggie Corso. The SCC champ placed fourth in Class M with an 11-dive score of 343.60.

Lyman Hall teammate Sara Blazejowski was right behind Corso in fifth place at 339.40. Lyman Hall’s Adriana Walton was ninth at 297.50.

In Class S, Sheehan had 5-6 finishers in Savanna Bauman (326.15) and Emmalyn Rodriguez (325.90). Trinity Duffy came in eighth at 319.30 for the Titans.

Among the larger schools, Cheshire’s Hannah Tao, the conference runner-up to Corso in the SCC, was ninth in Class L with a score of 330.10. Southington’s Taylor Cooley placed 17th in Class LL (328.60).
