RUNNING: Amid the heat, Arnold torches Fun Run course record

MERIDEN — Conditions were hot and humid for the fourth Meriden Fun Run of the summer Wednesday night. That did not slow down Derrick Arnold of Wallingford.

Two weeks removed from running a course record on the Meriden Linear Trail, the 2020 Sheehan grad rewrote it — by a lot.

Arnold blazed the three miles from the Platt track down to Dossin Beach and back in 16 minutes, 19 seconds. That was 38 seconds faster than the 16:47 Arnold logged in out-dueling Maloney standout Reynaldo Torres and Maloney cross country coach Derek Destefano on July 8.

What makes this week’s 16:19 even more impressive was not merely the weather conditions, but the lack of challengers to help push the pace. Neither Torres nor Destefano, the only other runners to go under 17 minutes since the Fun Run moved to the Meriden Linear Trail in 2014, competed this Wednesday.

Arnold, who will be running track and cross country at Southern Connecticut State University, was on his own. He won by nearly three minutes ahead of Phil Crosby (19:14), Joseph Migliore (19:42), Simon Santos (19:58) and Bill Liebler (20:51).

Selena Chatman, the top female runner, was sixth overall in 21:25. She has won all four women’s races so far this summer and holds the distaff course record with the 20:04 she recorded on July 15.

The Fun Run continues to draw well. There were 30 runners in the field this week.

Races continue every Wednesday night at Platt through August 19. Start time is 6:30 p.m.

There is no entry fee. Social distancing rules are observed. Runners must bring their own water. Bathrooms are not available.
