GIRLS BASKETBALL: Jagrosse returns as Sheehan completes sweep of LH

WALLINGFORD — In Friday night’s girls basketball crosstown matchup, the host Sheehan Titans got the better of their rival Lyman Hall, defeating the Trojans 46-17 for the season sweep.

Sheehan senior guard Madison DiPasquale led all scorers with 10 points and senior center Darla Jagrosse returned to action with seven points and was a force down low for the Titans (7-4) in her first game back from an ankle injury.

Junior guard Callie Cassulla led Lyman Hall (1-8) with four points.

“Give credit to Lyman Hall; I thought they played with great energy, they played physical,” said Sheehan coach Mike Busillo. “But for us it was Darla’s first game back. I think we were a little out of sync, but luckily we played well defensively, which made up for it.”

The first quarter was all DiPasquale, literally. DiPasquale scored all 10 of Sheehan’s points and was the lone scorer of the quarter for both teams as the Titans built a 10-0 lead.

DiPasquale hit the game’s first bucket with 6:39 left in the quarter. The score held at 2-0 for the next three minutes before DiPasquale hit two three’s in back-to-back possessions.

“It felt great (scoring the first 10 points), especially against Lyman Hall for the last time ever,” DiPasquale said. “It was awesome.”

The second quarter was slow to start, much like the first. It took 2½ minutes for the quarter’s first points to be scored — and, finally, they weren’t from DiPasquale. Jagrosse got a rebound off off a miss from DiPasquale and put it back up. She added another point a minute later from the free throw line.

Lyman Hall finally got on the scoreboard with 5:29 left in the half, as Casulla scored to make it a 12-2 game.

Unfortunately for the Trojans, though, those were the only points they’d score for the rest of the half. Sheehan closed out on a 6-0 run capped off by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Liv Cassesse. Sheehan led 18-2 at the break.

“You know, we just played man, we tried to make sure everything that Lyman Hall did was difficult and I thought Cassesse played really good defense, as well as Jagrosse,” said Busillo.

Sheehan came out hot to begin the third quarter, scoring the first 10 points of the second half to go up 28-2.

Casulla broke the run with 3:35 left in the quarter on a lay-up. Sheehan was held scoreless for 3:40 of play before getting back-to-back 3’s from Ella Dorsey and Cassesse near the end of the quarter.

“I think we did really good tonight especially defensively, only giving up 17 points,” said Cassesse. “Offensively, I think we could have scored a little bit more, but we had some turnovers and a slower start.”

Lyman Hall had its best quarter of the night in fourth, scoring 11 points.

Sheehan will be right back in action Saturday afternoon. The Titans host Hamden at 2 p.m.

The Trojans will look to get back in the win column Tuesday when they host the Branford Hornets at 7 p.m.
