SATURDAY SCHOLASTICS: Jumbo day from Jimbo powers LH hockey; SHS wrestlers take 3 titles at Timberlane; Ciccone breaks mark in 3200



NORTHFORD — Jimbo Cohrs notched a hat trick and, at the final horn, put a feather in the band with an empty net goal to lead the Lyman Hall hockey team to a 7-3 SCC/SWC crossover victory over the Milford Co-op on Saturday afternoon at the Northford Ice Pavilion.

Cohrs, a senior forward, scored in each period as the Trojans led start to finish. It was 2-0 after one period and 4-2 after the second.

Drew Zukowski, Louis Allanson and Nate D'Amico also had goals for the Trojans (1-7-2), who have a quick turnaround to Monday’s game at Northford against Branford at 3:20 p.m.

Indoor track

SCC Coaches Invitational: Cheshire junior Alexa Ciccone set a school record in winning the 3200 meters at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

Ciccone crossed in 11:06.17, six seconds ahead of Shelton’s Hannah Andrejczyk.

Ciccone also combined with Sarah Goldstein, Eva Curran and Julia Rubin for a third-place finish in the 4x800 relay (10:23.39).

Southington placed third in the boys 4x400 with the quartet of Ethan Giordano, Ben Vroeginday, Chris Regalbuti and William Reeves (3:36.02).

The Blue Knights got an additional bronze from Jessica Lombardo, who was third in the 1600 (5:23.33).

Also on Saturday, Lyman Hall’s sprint medley relay team placed third in 3:44.27. That relay featured Owen Rich, Michael Fisher and the Conklin brothers, Tim and Thomas.

Wrestling

Southington: The Blue Knights placed second at the Timberlane Invitational in New Hampshire behind division champions Jared Mangiafico, Colton Thorpe and Josh Howard.

Mangiafico, a senior 126-pounder, rode a decision and two pins to the finals, where he notched a 6-2 decision on a takedown and two reversals.

Thorpe, a senior, pinned his way to the 132 crown and Howard, a junior, was equally dominant at 138. Howard tallied a pin and technical fall before scoring a 16-8 major decision in the final.

Also for the Blue Knights, Aaron Mysatyukow placed second at 220 and Andrew Mikosz was third at 182.

The Wallingford contingent wrestling this season with Southington also did well. Lyman Hall’s Gavin Janowski was runner-up at 182 and Sheehan’s Jay Chase placed third at 132. 

Platt: The Panthers went 4-1 at their annual Silver City duals, beating East Haven (56-24), Canton (62-16), Nonnewaug (61-18) and Bloomfield (72-6) and falling to Windham (57-17).

Platt is now 19-4 overall on the season.

The Panthers got 5-0 performances Saturday from Cesar Rodriguez, Joel Yapport and Ahmed Hernandez.

Eddie Waters, Jereck Echeveria, Caiden Talento, Isaiah Smith and Jahi Mitchell picked up four wins apiece. 

Maloney: The Spartans had a 3-2 showing at the Arrigoni Classic in at Portland.

The wins were against Northwestern (78-0), Rocky Hill (43-33) and Portland (42-39). The losses were to New Britain (39-33) and South Windsor (40-39).

Maloney (17-8) got four-win afternoons from 106-pounder Logan Gagne, 120 Nick Rodriguez, 132 Robert Taylor, 152 Saleem Saleh, 160 Richard Alonso and 195 Deshaun Williams.

Gagne, Rodriguez, Saleh and Wililams had three pins apiece. Taylor and Alonso chalked up two each, with Taylor adding a tech fall.

Luis Delgado recorded three pins at 220. Daren Johnson had two pins and a major decision at 126.
