BRANFORD — Being a lower seed did not daunt the Sheehan girls lacrosse team on Saturday. Nor did it slow Sheehan’s winning ways.
The No. 6 Titans built a four-goal lead by halftime against No. 3 Branford, then steadily pulled away to a 16-7 upset of the Hornets on their home turf in the first round of the SCC Tournament.
The victory was the ninth straight for the 15-4 Titans and it puts them in Tuesday’s semifinals at No. 2 Guilford (14-1).
Cheshire, the No. 1 seed at 15-1, hosts No. 4 Daniel Hand in Tuesday’s other semifinal. Hand (9-8) beat No. 5 Sacred Heart Academy 17-8 on Saturday.Baseball
Berlin 10, Maloney 0: The Redcoats completed a sweep of Meriden on the week, won their 13th straight and improved to 17-1 overall with the CCC South-Colonial Division shutout on Friday night at Sage Park.
Maloney, now 8-10, was limited to three hits. John Vumback suffered the pitching loss.Softball
Berlin 8, Maloney 1: The Redcoats broke open a 2-0 CCC South-Colonial Division game late Friday night at Sage Park with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Berlin improved to 11-6. Maloney, which had beaten Berlin 5-4 earlier in the season, slipped to 14-5.
Lea White went 3-for-4, doubled and drove in Maloney’s lone run. Alexa Papallo doubled and scored.

Sheehan 7, Wilbur Cross 0: The sweep of the Governors in Wallingford gave the Titans a final regular-season mark of 10-10, which qualifies them for the postseason.
Mark Amodio led the singles slate with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 1. Gabe Wells and Julio Serna won by the same score at No. 1 doubles.
Andrew Saball won the No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-0, while Aymen Tayoubi was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 3.
No. 4 singles player John Womelsdorf rolled 6-0, 6-0 as did the No. 2 doubles team of Noah Becker and John Yoder.
Injury prompted a Wilbur Cross forfeit at No. 3 doubles to Micah Lee and Mike Morales.Girls tennis
Sheehan 6, East Haven 1: The Lady Titans completed the regular season at 13-7 and riding a six-match winning streak with the SCC decision in Wallingford.
The Titans qualified for the SCC Tournament. They’ll travel to Milford on Monday to face Lauralton Hall in the quarterfinals.Boys volleyball
Maloney 3, NFA 1: The Spartans out-lasted the Wildcats 29-27, 20-25, 28-26, 25-22 on Senior Night at Maloney.
The Spartans put nine of their 10 seniors on the court. Only three-year starter Russell Lozowski, the team kills leader with 140, was out of action (concussion).
In his absence, Wijeury Collado collected nine kills and 22 digs.
Jaybril Pagan was all over the court, producing 30 assists, 23 digs and three kills.
Pagan spread out the offense. Michael Coitrone, like Collado, had nine kills to go along with three blocks. Greg Peruti put down a team-high 11 kills while also serving four aces.
Patrick Daley and Trevon Velez both had eight digs and two aces. Daley also delivered three kills and three blocks. Velez dished four assists.
Tyler Browne added nine digs and two kills, Hunter Bernabucci had a kill, Anthony Figueroa was 100 percent serving.
