THURSDAY SCHOLASTICS: Sheehan sharp in Shelton to tip off season; LH & Cheshire stumble at home



SHELTON — Kris Jackson poured in a game-high 23 points and Jack McDonnell added 17 as the Sheehan boys basketball team opened its season with a 62-44 SCC crossover victory over Shelton on Thursday night.

McDonnell and Jackson also grabbed eight rebounds apiece.

McDonnell’s five steals and three blocked shots fueled a solid defense for the Titans. 

Stanley Franzik, Arthur Cordes and Tyler Carmen also excelled on the defensive end of the floor. Franzik and Garrett Molampy added eight points apiece for the Titans.

Peri Basimakopoulos paced the Gaels with 21 points.

Hillhouse 50, Cheshire 27: Hillhouse led this SCC interdivisional game in Cheshire even before it started. The Rams were issued a technical foul for dunking in warmups and the Academics hit both shots.

By halftime, Hillhouse led 26-14.

Ben Wable netted eight points and Cole Feinauer chipped in with seven for the Rams. Alec Frione added five.

Tazhon Daniels led Hillhouse with 11 points. Evan Alexander-Scott was good for 10.

The Academics are ranked No. 5 in the GameTime CT media poll.

Foran 58, Lyman Hall 38: The Trojans dropped their season opener in a SCC crossover in Wallingford.

The Trojans bolted to a 14-6 lead in the first quarter and held a 20-19 advantage at the half, but were outscored 18-4 in the final quarter, as Foran extended a 40-34 lead.

Tyler Parente led LH with 10 points.

Ice hockey

North Haven 3, Lyman Hall Co-op 2 (OT): T.J. Arduini and Luke Pettit had the goals for the Trojans as the state’s reigning Division III champs opened the season late Wednesday night with the overtime loss to the Indians at Northford Ice Pavilion.

LH hosts Cheshire at Northford on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
