THURSDAY SCHOLASTICS: LH swimmers take it to the wall; Maloney girls reach 10-win plateau



SHELTON— The Lyman Hall-Coginchaug boys swim team went in with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay and closed the door with the fast time in the 400 freestyle style.

In between, the Trojans gathered a whole lot of gold to chalk up a 93-71 SCC Division II victory Thursday over Shelton at the Shelton Community Center.

LH had double-winners in the Lagamao brothers, Kenny and Jerick. Ryan Christopoulos and Alex Sabo also recorded individual victories, with Christopoulos capturing the 200 freestyle in 2:08.42 and Sabo securing the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.87.

As for the Lagamaos, Jerick went long and short. The sophomore won the 500 freestyle in 5:18.91 and the 50 free in 23.42. Kenny Lagamao was first in the 200 IM (2:10.94) and 100 backstroke (1:03.73).

The Lagamaos teamed with Sabo and Matt Clem on the first-place 200 medley relay (1:51.02). Clem and Christopoulos combined with Jay Zhao and Sydney Raffles on the winning 400 free (4:07.15).

The Trojans now stand at 3-3.

Boys basketball

East Hartford 93, Maloney 57: Chris Lomax scored 23 points and Zander Robinson racked up 21 to lead the Hornets to the CCC crossover victory over the Spartans in East Hartford.

East Hartford improved to 7-6 while knocking Maloney to 2-8.

Donte Kelly was high scorer for the Spartans with 20 points. Stone De’Leon was also in double figures with 10.

East Haven 69, Sheehan 58: Down 40-25 at halftime, the Titans closed to within three with three minutes left in the third quarter before the Yellowjackets closed the frame with eight straight points to re-exert control in a SCC Oronoque matchup in East Haven.

The Easties knocked down 11 3-pointers in improving to 9-4. Kyle Cusano drained six en route to a game-high 20 points.

Tim Case (17), Ron Calderon (16) and Theo Rawls (11) were also in double figures for East Haven.

Sheehan (6-7) got a team-high 14 points from Kyron Coviello. Ethan Pabon and Anthony MarkAntony had nine apiece, with MarkAnthony connecting three times from beyond the arc.

Isaiah Hernandez added eight for Sheehan.

Branford 55, Cheshire 46: The Hornets improved to 11-2 and snapped a two-game Cheshire win streak in this SCC Quinnipiac game in Branford. The Rams are now 3-8.

Girls basketball

Maloney 47, Hartford Public 40: The Spartans hit the 10-win plateau with the CCC crossover victory over the Owls in Meriden.

Maloney was very balanced. Senior guards Gracey Massicotte (13) and Amal Bahili (10) were both in double figures, while junior forward Jaylice Rosario rang up 12 points and seven rebounds.

Nadia Berrios added eight points and Evelyn Beltran collected six.

Ty Mercado and Mari Figueroa had 13 apiece for the Owls.

Maloney (10-1) and Hartford Public (5-9) complete their home-and-home series Saturday, weather permitting, in Hartford.

Ice hockey

Sheehan 7, Amity 3: Senior defenseman Brenden Hilinski notched the hat trick to lead the Titans over the host Spartans late Wednesday night at Bennett Rink.

Hilinski’s third goal came at a critical juncture early in the third period. Amity, down 4-0 in the second period, had scored three straight goals to close to within 4-3.

Hilinski’s goal returned momentum to the Titans, and the sealed the SCC/SWC Division II victory with a pair of goals by Max Festa and Billy Totz in the final minute.

Anthony DeFilio got Sheehan on the board 1:12 into the second period after a scoreless first. Andry Guy converted in the slot two minutes later to push the advantage to 2-0.

Hilinski then got his first two goals off assists from Festa and DeFilio.

With the win, Sheehan improved to 10-1 and leap-frogged Lyman Hall (9-1) into the No. 1 spot in the CIAC Division II playoff points. The Trojans are scheduled to play Daniel Hand on Saturday night at the Nortford Ice Pavilion, while the Titans are scheduled to travel to the Milford Ice Pavilion to face the Milford Co-op.
