WALLINGFORD — Yahya Kardad scored a pair of goals in the second half Tuesday to power Lyman Hall to a 2-1 upset of Xavier in a SCC boys soccer game at Fitzgerald Field.
Kardad’s goals came in a span of eight minutes, the second on a penalty kick.
That proved to be the game-winner as the Trojans handed the Falcons (3-1) their first defeat. Xavier was ranked No. 6 among Class LL and L schools in the state coaches poll released Tuesday.
Lyman Hall, which played Cheshire to a scoreless draw on Saturday, is now 2-1-1.
Cheshire 3, Hamden 0: Marcello Pannone scored two goals while Matt Pisani and Andres Diosa combined on the shutout in net as the host Rams posted the SCC victory at Alumni Field.
Max Manware also found the back of the net for Cheshire. Samir Dishnica notched an assist.
The Rams improved to 2-1-1. The Green Dragons slipped to 1-2-1.
Wilcox Tech 5, Vinal Tech 0: The Indians shook off a two-game slide with the CTC rout of the Middletown squad at Falcon Field. Wilcox is now 2-2. Vinal is 0-4.
Middletown 3, Maloney 0: The Spartans dipped to 2-3 with the CCC setback in Middletown. The Blue Dragons, who have yet to yield a goal this season, remained unbeaten at 5-0.Girls soccer
Maloney 4, Middletown 0: The Spartans built a 3-0 lead by halftime in chalking up the CCC victory on the new Maloney turf. All three of those goals came in a span of less than two minutes courtesy of Mackenzie McCormack, Daisy Delgado and Molly Marcuss. Marcuss added a second goal in the second half following up a rebound on a penalty kick. Maloney carried the attack, out-shooting Middletown 19-6. Abby Lespier posted four saves in net as the Spartans improved to 2-2-1 and knocked the Blue Dragons to 0-5.
Cheshire 3, Hamden 2: Gabby Tirado scored two more goals and Ellie Pergolotti tallied one goal and one assist to lead the Rams to the SCC triumph in Hamden. It was the third straight win for Cheshire, which now stands at 3-1. Hamden fell to 2-2. Anna Hurlbut had an assist on one of the Cheshire goals. Wilcox Tech 3, Vinal Tech 0: The Indians rolled to 5-0 with a 25-9, 25-22, 25-15 CTC sweep in Middletown. Setter Montgomery Rios (8 assists) spread the wealth. Sacaria Cooper had six kills, while Na’Sya Burkes and Mikaela Mitchell had five apiece. Cooper and Mitchell also served up three aces. Rios added four kills.
Maloney 3, Bulkeley 0: Also standing at 5-0 in the Silver City are the Spartans, who cruised past the Bulldogs 25-11, 25-18, 25-8 in a CCC sweep in Meriden. Gracey Massicotte had the touch. The setter dished 14 assists and served 10 aces. Savannah Bernabucci buried nine kills and three aces, while Jylosdet Davila led the defense with six digs. Elizabeth Barton added four kills and Rachel Case cranked out five aces.
Mercy 3, Lyman Hall 0: The SCC sweep in Wallingford did not come easily as the Tigers got past the host Trojans 25-22, 26-24, 25-22. Lilly Hedge was the leading lady for the Middletown squad. She piled up 19 digs, seven kills and three blocks. Mercy setter Bella Bartolomei delivered 24 assists and two aces. Elena Puszka contributed 12 digs and four kills as the Tigers improved to 2-3. LH got double-doubles from Ellery Campbell and Gianna Scopetto. Campbell 15 digs and 10 kills. Scopetto grabbed 13 digs and handed out 18 assists. The Trojans are 3-2 heading into Thursday’s rivlary match at home with Sheehan.
Avon 3, Southington 0: The Falcons scored the CCC win in Southington by game scores of 25-21, 25-10, 25-17. Avon (4-1) rode the play of Skyler Blackington (12 digs, 8 kills, 6 aces) and Jocee Powers (27 assists, 4 digs). Southington (2-3) got five kills from Rachel Possidento and four from Kayli Garcia. Defensively, the Blue Knights got double-digit digs from Kaley Smith (11) and Emma Pfanzelt (10). Morgan Birdsey added eight digs while also putting down four kills. Haley Weiner (11) and Victoria Zajda (10) combined for 21 assists.Girls swimming
Shelton 101, Sheehan 80: Katie Webb and Leila Sofiane won two races each for the Titans in their virtual meet with the Gaels. Alanna Dwyer and Savannah Bauman also had victories. Webb captured the 100-yard butterfly in 1:10.12 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.37) Sofiane swept the distance freestyles, taking the 200 in 2:05.37 and the 500 in 5:36.99. Dwyer had the fast time in the 200 individual medley with a 2:33.19. Bauman took diving with a score of 174.25.
