Wallingford 10U softball makes the state final

WINDSOR — The Wallingford 10U softball all-stars have advanced to the state finals with a thrilling 3-2 win over host Windsor on Thursday night.

Wallingford trailed 2-0 for much of the game but scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to earn the win.

Windsor threatened in the sixth inning. The final two outs were plays at the plate. Samatha Allison fired home to catcher Savannah Hastings to get the second out of the sixth. Then on a delayed steal, pitcher Caitlyn Hale caught a runner trying to steal home with a throw to Hastings (2-for-2, walk) as Wallingford finished the thrilling win.

Hale earned the win in the circle. She went all six innings. She allowed one earned run on six hits and three walks. She fanned eight.

The Wallingford RBIs came off the bats of Josie Chapin, Briella Krystofolski and Lorelei Schunmann.

Wallingford will now play on Saturday against Madison or Milford.

Destefano continues

dominance in Fun Run

MERIDEN — Derek Destefano won Week 5 of the Meriden Fun Run on a hot 95-degree day.

Destefano topped the 19 runners with a 17:41 on the three-mile course.

He’s won every race this summer.

He was followed by Jack Barney (2nd, 18:21), Anthony Hernandez (3rd, 19:43), Dajjah Dudley (4th, 20:15) and Tom Starodaj (5th, 20:30) to round out the top five

The top female finisher was Coralis Soto, who was 12th overall with a 28:32.

The Meriden Fun Run continues for the next five Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. The race starts at the Platt track and jockeys down the Meriden Linear Trail and back. There is also a ¾-mile kids race.

Wallingford 10U Little League advances to Sectional finals

TERRYVILLE – Wallingford 10U All-Star baseball team rebounded from a 3-0 loss on Wednesday night with an 8-2 win over Shelton in Terryville on Thursday night.

Wallingford will face Avon tomorrow for the Sectional Championships at 7 p.m. in Terryville.

Brandon Quinn earned the win on the mound. The contest was tied 2-2 after five innings and Wallingford erupted for six runs in the sixth.
