WALLINGFORD — A car fire on Route 15 South backed up traffic on the road for nearly an hour Tuesday afternoon. No one was injured in the incident, but the smoke and flames impeded visibility on the highway, requiring the closure of one lane while firefighters brought the blaze under control.
Lt. Bill Barker of the Wallingford Fire Department said the cause of the vehicle fire, which occurred at about 3 p.m in the median strip between exits 65 and 66, was likely mechanical. Units subdued the fire within 10 to 15 minutes and cleared the scene by 3:50 p.m., by which time both lanes were open again, he said.
The car was totaled in the incident.
