WALLINGFORD — Firefighters extinguished a large wood chip fire on Barnes Road Monday afternoon.

Around 1:30 p.m., firefighters responded to 9 Barnes Road for a report of a fire. At the scene, a large pile of wood chips was burning. Access to the private property was blocked.

The property owner, Joe Geremia, said the wood chip pile is about 900 square feet. A large amount of white smoke could be seen emerging from the property. A nearby greenhouse was not damaged, according to Geremia, owner of Geremia Greenhouses. There is no fire hydrant in the area, and crews used a tanker truck to fight the blaze.
